Today’s challenges facing traditional education – that of an always-on internet that quickly makes facts irrelevant, and artificial intelligence and automation will soon make routine work vanish – require our schools to educate our children differently. Curiosity and creativity will drive children to build their own knowledge and relate this knowledge to their world.

This new amorphous world also makes identity an important basis for making choices and decisions. A basic need in all this is to be well read. Children access information in more ways than we did. Text comes in many forms – traditional textbooks, novels, blogs and videos. This inter-textuality needs an even higher degree of reading skills. The medium matters little – children must be strong readers first.
